Tina Fey Weight Advice

  • Losing weight for specific events sets you up to fail
  • Tina Fey weight advice makes being thin seem unattainable
  • Learn how I lost weight naturally

Tina Fey weight advice was given out, in a round about way, at the 2014 Golden Globes.

Mathew McConaughey did amazing work this year. For his role in Dallas Buyers Club he lost 45 pounds. Or what actresses call, being in a movie.

While Tina’s quote is obviously a joke, there’s often a hint of what someone believes in their humor. That’s what makes jokes funny.

For years I believed losing weight was hard

The messaging we get from the weight-loss industry, which is supported by society and pop culture, leads us to believe weight loss is difficult. However it wasn’t until after 10 years of struggle that I stopped following complicated weight-loss advice, focused on being healthy and lost weight.

Now that I understand how to lose weight, I know you can reach a healthy weight naturally.

This knowledge has made all the myths that perpetuate the idea that weight loss is about extremes, sacrifices and willpower, incredibly frustrating. I don’t want anyone to waste their time and energy trying to lose weight with information that sets them up to fail.

I lost weight when I stopped focusing on deadlines

How often do you hear about people losing weight for specific events? For instance, an upcoming holiday, a season, like summer, when we can’t hide behind our clothes, a wedding … or any other role we play in our own lives. But dieting with a due date is self-defeating. Putting pressure on a specific date encourages quick fixes.

If you want to reach and maintain a healthy weight you need to focus on the journey, not the destination. Keeping weight off long term requires building habits you can keep up long term.

Slowly adapting your eating and exercise choices will help you build healthy habits. Then you’ll naturally reach and maintain a healthy weight.

Losing weight isn’t like playing darts where you target a number. Aiming for a set weight by a fixed date gets in the way of trial and error. Making mistakes and getting used to new choices are a necessary part of discovering what works for you.

Tina Fey weight advice, her joke about losing weight quickly for something specific, is basically about yo-yo dieting. And yo-yo dieting is about starving yourself thin, then gaining it back and then doing it again. And again. This preoccupying cycle is unhealthy for your body and mind. Restricting what you eat and then overeating makes it harder to lose weight and gets in the way of you focusing on your real goals. Especially when reaching and maintaining a healthy weight can be done naturally.

At the 2013 Golden Globes Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made a similar joke to Tina’s in 2014:

Tina:
The hunger games was one of the biggest films of the year, and also what I call the 6 weeks it took me to get into this dress.

Amy:
Ang Lee has been nominated for the best director for the Life of Pi, which is what I’m going to call the 6 weeks after I take this dress off.

I love Tina Fey (and Amy Poehler!)

I read Bossypants.
I watched Tina in the Sarah Palin sketch on SNL.
Mean Girls is an important movie.

If Tina put my life under a microscope she could certainly find room for improvement in areas she’s hitting the bulls-eye every time. The reason I wanted to talk about her quote – a sentiment I’ve heard over and over again from many different people – is because popular culture makes being thin seem unattainable. The media always talks about being blessed with good genes or how disciplined an actress is to reach a healthy weight. There’s too much misinformation out there supporting the false idea that it’s hard to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

You can lose weight naturally

When I went back-to-the-basics I lost weight. I was so confused by all the diet rules, tips and tricks that I stopped following them. Then I started eating 3 balanced meals a day. My metabolism picked back up when I ate more and exercised less. Then I lost weight. Now that I understand how to lose weight I know getting fit isn’t difficult the way the world makes it out to be.

Somehow taking a natural approach to losing weight has been lost in the spin that sells movies, magazines and miracle weight-loss drugs and diets. Anyone trying to lose weight goes into it after years of hearing so many different sources say how hard it is to lose weight. Soon we start to believe it. This misinformation can make you feel defeated before you begin.

In reality, you can reach and maintain a healthy weight naturally when you make small changes to what you’re already doing toward the goal of eating 3 balanced meals each day. And eating balanced snacks when you’re hungry. Simplify your approach to reaching and maintaining a healthy weight!

Don’t spend your time losing and gaining weight, over and over again the way I did. When you understand why losing weight can be straightforward, it’s easier to make healthy choices that set you up for success.

To borrow a quote I love from the Dallas Buyers Club Movie:

I got one life, I want it to mean something.
